Adopting A Dog, Need Help?

By admin Posted in: Training

We’re looking at adding a third ‘puppy’ to our family. I think I’ve narrowed it down to two choices at the moment and would like some input from people with a bit more dog experience than me.
Our current dogs are a 7 year old Great Dane X Rotti, and a 2 year old Fox Terrier X. We have two young children. Any dog we get will be an inside dog, but we do have acreage for a more energetic dog to explore. I HATE the puppy stage so our new fur baby will be an adult rescue dog. I’m also not keen on small dogs. Our Fox Terrier is a bit of a sore point with me because of this.
The two girls we are looking at are:
2 year old Saluki X. She’s a real tear jerker who has been at the rescue shelter for over a year now. She has received extensive obedience training. She gets along well with other dogs but is smaller than I would like and submissive. That might not be a good thing with my children.
2 year old Keeshond X. I have no experience of this breed. She has been at the shelter for close to a year now. The dog in question is very well socialised with both dogs and children. She’s closer to the size I want, the temperament I want, but there’s all that HAIR!
Help me decide, please! I’d love to adopt both dogs but due to animal restrictions I can only bring home one of these two girls.

This is totally up to you, and the two dogs you have right now – and be aware that even if you take them to the Shelter to meet these dogs, once brought home, onto their territory, things may be completely different.
I also feel, with respect, that you have quite enough on your hands right now. I never like to suggest people with children of under 5 bring a new dog in – it’s different if the babies arrive after the dogs (although that needs care!) but if I were you, I’d wait until the kids are over 5, and enjoy the two dogs you already have.
    My opinion!

Salukis are “sight” hounds like greyhounds. They can be a little nervous of rough and tumble so may not be a good choice with very young children. They will also chase anything small.
Keeshund are small dogs – so I assume the “cross” was with a much bigger dog? They are by nature very child and dog friendly – but the coat will need brushing a lot.

I would take your 2 dogs for a meet-and-greet with each of the ones you are looking at, and get the one that gets along best with your dogs.

What are the sexes of the two dogs you already have? Are they spayed/neutered? Please give more information and re-post.
