I have two dogs one who is 5 months and another who is about 4-5 years and I have had both since they were puppies and tried to train them but I am having a horrible time. The biggest thing is I have the worst time walking them on the leash because they pull constantly. They literally pull me the whole way and it makes our walks very unpleasant. Any tips for how to stop them from pulling? I tried harnesses and also stopping every time they pull but then they pull once we start walking again :/ And I won’t use a choke collar. Any advice would be great thanks!!

Nichole – I have found that the no pull harness work very well. I will put a link to one on amazon.. They aren’t very costly and worked really well for my Golden Retriever puppy. It wraps around the front and under the front legs so every time a dog wants to pull it can’t because their arms are pulled in an upward motion.

I used to think that it would be impossible to train my puppy to not pull on a lead but now she does great!
She actually hates the harness for some odd reason. She is a big baby.. It doesn’t hurt her in anyway I think she just feels confined (she doesn’t even really like her collar). So I started using the harness and slowly I would start going on walks without the harness but bring it along in case she started pulling and noticed that if she did pull all I would have to do is show her the harness and she would stop!
Anyways, it worked well for me. I agree about choke chains.. I wouldn’t use one either and I found an easier way. My now 8 month old puppy does great on a lead and walks right next to me instead of 6 feet in front of me
If you read the reviews a lot of people will recommend it also! Out of almost 500 reviews it is rated 4 stars.. Pretty good for so many reviews! One person did say – it won’t work for every human or dog but it is definitely worth the money to give it a try!
Take them to a beginner obedience class where you can be observed with your pups and get tips on correcting this. A trainer may also recommend something like a self restraining harness (not a regular harness, but one designed to cause discomfort when the dog pulls- they restrain themselves). One brand that I use and is great is called “Easy Walk Harness” by Gentle Leader. It is not the type that goes around their mouth. It does not look like or work like a typical harness and the lead attaches to the front in the chest area. If you decide to try this, get the slightly more expensive two toned one. It works better. Get someone to help you fit it properly so your dog can’t pull out of it.
I trained my dogs by shortening my leash, and holding their collar with my hand, next to my leg, using the word “Heal” as the key word. I also used a dog clicker, so when I let go of the collar, and they didn’t pull, I clicked the clicker, and gave them a treat. You can start with them sitting, and go from there. Hope this helped!!
I have a dog that pulls a lot as well. Her name is heidi and she is a lab, collie, golden retriever, australian Shepard, and german shepard mixed. She pulls like crazy. What we do is everytime she pulls we pull her back and make her sit for 5 seconds the first time 10 the second 15 the third and so on. Eventually she learns and stops pulling as much. When she does not pull she is rewarded if she pulls she is told she is bad and to lie down when we get home. it seems to be working.
I stopped this by giving a firm short yank on the leash, you have to do it a lot and it doesn’t hurt them if you are not using a choke collar. It took a bit but now as soon as they feel the leash get tight they slow down for a bit.
Get a Trainer who endorses using a prong and use one a few corrections and no more pulling dogs .
Google ‘training dogs’ and follow instructions. All they need to know is the rules and they’ll be happy to obey.
Get a book on clicker training. It works wonders! Just give it a try.
A Halti or Gentle Leader. http://www.doglogic.com/halter.htmhttp://www.buygentleleader.com/View.aspx…
Here’s a site on it, but I would suggest you read a bit more online as well. Basically you are steering your dog like you would a horse, by their head. If they pull to the end of the leash, they just wind up facing you.
It has worked for my lab and I went through 2 years of training with her (including classes) and still couldn’t get her to stop pulling. Finally the trainer suggest I use the halti. As she has gotten older I have had to use it less and less. If she is pulling too much one day, I use the halti the next and she quits pulling for the next few walks. I just have to use it as an occasional reminder now.
Forget the harness, They are designed for pulling, They are used for hunting, sniffing out contraband, drugs and the like. The first thing is the leash should be placed up on the neck behind the ears. Just like trainers do in dog shows. Next is your energy (what you are feeling) Is it anger, frustration, tenseness. This kind of energy will get you nowhere with a dog because they see these feelings as weak. Your energy has to be calm and assertive. What does that mean? It means, no matter what don’t loose your cool, and assertive means This is how I want you to behave. If you start to feel anything like nervous, frustrated angry. Just stop, take a step back, take a deep breath, and start again. Dogs don’t understand the words, but they do know what your feeling (your energy) With determination to succeed you will have to continue the exercise until you accomplish what you want. Try it with only the older dog, when you get the behavior your looking for, the puppy will automatically follow. Remember calm and assertive. Also, when the dog gives you what you want loosen the tension on the leash, this makes the dog understand that this is what you want.
