Can You Help With Dog Training Problems?

By admin Posted in: Dog Training

We keep having problems with our Lab first we couldnt keep him in the back yard, now we have solved that problem.
He then started digging holes in the grass, problem solved.
Now he has taken to chewing anything left outside and pulling washing off the line! He does all this while we are out and cant see him doing it so cannot discipline him right away for it.
We were walking him daily for about 4km (40mins) with a bit of running off the lead in the middle each time and then we were told not to make this his only form of entertainment to get him content with being in his own back yard so dropped it back to every second day with spending time playing and teaching him on the day in between.
I make him toys with food in, those so called boredom busters and many many other things to try and stop the boredom but nothing seems to work.
I am extremely frustrated and find myself smacking him out of frustration. I know I shouldnt do that so please dont lecture me about it, I just dont know what else to do.
I have tried looking online for discipline techniques but all it says is what not to do!
I need some help.
This cant go on, today he ripped up some of my pants off the line where before he just pulled them off – its escalating! I cant afford a trainer I just spent alot of money getting him neutered and wont spend more.
PLEASE HELP!!!

    Three potiental techniques to try:
    1. Petsmart Training. Most classes cost around $109.00 and come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. (According to my local Petsmart, ask yours for more information! :D ) Take him to training and the trainer will be able to help you with these problems.
    2. Exercise your Dog IN ADDITION TO socialization (let your dog play with other dogs) as well as you playing with your dog in general. You dont have to do all three in one day, instead change it up frequently to help him with his high energy levels.
    3. You can always crate train him (or use an outdoor enclosure). This is an easy fix because it keeps him away from potential items to destroy AS WELL AS keeps your belongings FROM being destroyed. Place some Kong toys (toys where you can place food in), among other attention occupying items in the crate while you’re away. Crates are great as well, because they keep your dog safe and secure while your away. Safe dog = Ease of mind.
You don’t have to incorporate all of these things into your dogs life immediately, but the sooner you do, the better he will behave. Generally, Labs are very energetic in they youth and mellow out as they get older. You just have to wait and be patient. Also, neutering your dog (like you said you did. :D ) has been know to calm dogs down some as well.
As for the slapping… I promise you that this won’t be a lecture, but you need to find other ways to keep his attention. If he is doing something wrong while you are at him, distract him and get his attention on something else instead. NEVER use a crate as a punishment, only as positive reinforcement.
I sincerely wish you the best of luck with your Lab. I hope that my advice helps you out a lot. :)

This dog needs more exercise not less!
Whoever told you to walk him every second day didn’t have a clue what they were talking about.
He needs more exercise every day, in ADDITION to time spent training. Work on obedience with him, then maybe you could get involved in agility or flyball. A bored and frustrated dog is going to be destructive, not the dog’s fault.
Why don’t people research breeds before getting them? Labs are extremely high energy dogs!

sounds like an untrained dog that needs more exericse
bored dogs will dig, run, get loud, destroy things
why is he out in yard without supervision?

My dog did the same stuff. If you get the dog out every day I’d say for an hour of hard exercise, then that should really help. I think the best exercise would be to go to a big field and get a tennis ball thrower so that you can really get the dog runner at top speed for a while. You could also set up doggie playdates to help get some of that rough and tumble energy out. As for the clothes, maybe until the dog gets older, get a drying rack and hang the clothes up inside in a gated off room so that the dog can get to them.

I have a 6 month old black lab called Jazzy, they are very Intelligent dogs and need a lot of stimulation.
Jazzy chews everything in sight she is teething at the moment, you don’t need a trainer they are very expensive. Can you find a training course locally to give you some training tips. I take Jazzy to training classes every week.
You are right about smacking your dog, don’t do it. You will only create more problems

“I cant afford a trainer I just spent alot of money getting him neutered and wont spend more.” Then find him a new home. Dogs cost money get used to its.
Labs need DAILY exercise not every other day.
Discipline is more of an issue with you. YOU need to discipline to understand that your dog needs DAILY exercise and not just bloody walks. Toys by himself out in the yard will not cut it.
Either meet your dog’s needs to find him a new home.

  7. Natasha G Says

if you dont want to pay the money for him maybe you shouldnt pay the money to replace those pants he ripped up!
you should’ve thought of these things before you got him. labs are hyper dogs non-the-less if he is a young one. you need to spend more time with him daily. dont leave your things out were he can rach while you are gone. to discepline you need to catch him in the momment that he is doing something bad for a dog to register iits bad behaviour.
no next time get a pet rock it sound like a better matck for you
