How Are Gsds Trained To Attack On Command?

By admin Posted in: Dog Training

I have a 5 month old German shepherd. I will be taking her for training soon but I’m just curious how they do it. She is CKC registered with bloodlines from Norway. Father of her was used in the military as an attack dog and mother is quite friendly! I heard to be trained for protection they need the “genetics” which I’m sure she has. We were petting the mother of my gsd and when he pulled out the training tool (kind of looked like a small pillow with handles) he said a German word like Foos (not sure how to spell it) or something similar. There were 2 words and the dog would NOT let go until he said the magic word. So I’m just curious how this is done.
And yes I am aware of what can happen if your dog bites someone. But If I am in serious danger I think I’d like to live. I do NOT want an attack dog and YES I am aware a dog will protect it’s pack leader from instinct, but I’d also like to have her know the command just incase !

i don’t believe with what the person above me says. most dogs WILL protect you if you are being threatened but that doesn’t mean all dogs will. the ‘command’ is whatever word you want it to be. but be sure it’s a very strange or uncommon word so you don’t accidently say it. best thing to do is go to someone who is a professional trainer.

In order for a dog to do that, alot of training needs to be done by a professional trainer, it’s not something that can be done at home by the average owner with no experience.
And NO dog will protect out of instinct, a dog will look to you to protect HIM.
I know dogs, and don’t need to watch some hack actor pretend he’s a trainer. If you want to learn how to truely train your dog, turn off the tv and hire a real trainer.

Dogs have protected their humans out of instinct with no prior training.
As for training your dog to attack on command, you’re playing with fire. Get a professional attack dog trainer or forget it.

I’ve heard Cesar say many, many times…dogs look to the pack leader for protection, and your dog looks to you. I’ve never heard Cesar say it the other way round.
Now, that’s the general rule, but there are dogs who will step between you and danger, I know this to be a fact. Dogs are all individuals, they don’t think about what to do, they just do it.
The thing about personal protection training is, you must know with 100% confidence that the dog will comply with your instructions with 100% reliability. The dog must attack because it was commanded to do so, and not out of fear or aggression or prey drive. Otherwise it will not release upon command.
The dog cannot be expected to know who it may attack and who it may not. For example, you don’t want the dog to save you from the person who is saving your life by adminstering CPR, or the Heimlich manuver.
For this reason, it’s not something to mess around with at home.
However, there is something you would probably enjoy, and your dog will find it immensly rewarding: it’s a canine sport called “Shutzhund” — it involves obedience, tracking and personal protection. Look it up.
