Someone I love very, very much has decided he wants to train hop across the country before he goes to college. He meets random homeless people when he’s traveling, and if he thinks they’re “cool” he’ll want to do whatever they say is “cool”. He doesn’t understand that train hopping is nothing like it was in the great depression, it’s not easy, it’s not fun or cool, it’s just a really quick way to die or lose limbs. He doesn’t listen to me like he listens to these homeless people he idealizes, he grew up rich and fantasizes poverty. He doesn’t listen to adults, either, not even his parents. He just doesn’t realize how dangerous it is and how stupid of an idea it is!
I was thinking about telling his mother, and finding a way to stop him from going with her. I was going to offer to get a job (I’m a teen in school) and use all my money to buy him train tickets across the country instead, so he can travel, but won’t die. It hurts so much because he gets so upset when I tell him I feel like dying (I’m depressed) and then he goes on and comes with this idiotic plan! I love him so much and so does his family, I don’t want to see him get hurt or killed, and I don’t want his family to get torn apart like that.
I know 4 boys (all teens) personally who train hopped. 3 of them are dead. One of them was murdered by another train hopper, one of them jumped off and was dragged underneath the train, one of them fell through the bottom of a boxcar and died, and the one that’s still alive, got hit by a train and torn in half. He is seriously disfigured and he should be dead, the doctors said he’d die, his wounds were fatal, it’s a miracle he’s not dead. That f*cking idiot.

We all know there is nothing I can say, you can say or his parents can say that will change his mind. As a practical matter, I’d get to work on loving him a little less, because there is trouble ahead.
But I would tell him that I worked nearly three decades as an engineer and there is NO WAY you’d get me on a freight train as an illegal rider, which is what train hopping is. I can assure anyone that there are more dangers around the rails besides trying to get on or off while moving, or even if just minding your own business in a filthy box car.
I would also point out that when you screw around with a train, in addition to any violations of state law, they criminal charges will be leveled by the United States of America, investigated by the FBI and tried in a Federal Court.
A seemingly innocent activity is anything but.
But, the good news is, he can have the experience right in his own back yard,
What you do is wait until the middle of July (if in the northern hemisphere) and then fashion a crude “cube” out of scraps of corrugated iron or pipe culvert. Three sides and a roof are needed, the fourth side left open. Make sure it gets little or no shade during the day.
Tell him he gets two gallons of water and a few cans of food, and have him crawl in on a Thursday at mid-day. He stays until Monday morning.
At irregular intervals, an assistant must run by and throw a pail of dirt and sand through the open side. Others will be needed to come by at irregular intervals and bang on either of the three sides you have constructed with a sledge hammer during hours of darkness and throughout the night.
On Saturday morning, take the remaining water like someone will be happy to do while they are out and about with the rider. Slicing the throot is optional, of course.
And there ya go. All the thrills and romance of riding the rails and you never have to leave the safety of your own back yard.
Waiiiiiit a minute! This could be the next pet rock.

Old guy : “I will get on as long as the train is moving so I can count the telephone poles going by”
” less experienced guy said ” I will get on and off as long as I can count the RR ties going past”
I said i will not jump unless it is going slow enough so I can count the ballast rocks”
