How Do I Get My Puppy To Stop Lunging At Other Dogs?

By admin Posted in: Dog Training

I have a 8 month old hound mix of course she has a lot of energy and I understand her desire to play, but she is very excitable around other dogs. She barks and pulls towards the dogs and she is scaring other dog owners, not to mention some other dogs do not like this. I have her on a halti and now that is ineffective. She ignores my commands to stop and sit. I already try to teach her to sit when we see other dogs and she’ll do that until they get close, then she’ll start the barking and pulling. I try taking her to the dog park to play and run and that was good for the first few months, but now all she wants to do is just bark excessively at the big dogs in their fenced in big dog area running along the fence, and ignoring my commands to stop. Everyone at the park is annoyed by her, and we rarely go now which is not good for my puppy. I have been to trainers but no one has addressed my dogs individual problems these classes are structured to give the basic obedience training in a “class” setting. Does anyone have any advice or any idea why she does this? I am at the end of my rope!!!

Rewards when she doesn’t lung and carry on.
Get a friend with another dog and work on getting the other dog get closer without your dog lunging and getting over excited and reward her when she doesn’t react. When you get here settled with one dog then you’ll need to do the same with random dogs until she’s trained not to react. It’ll take time, but will be worth it.

Correct rewards when she doesn’t lunge at other dogs, and a quick hard correction when she does. By correction, I mean snap back on the leash. Not sure how that works with the halti, but probably just fine.

when you see him about to lunge pull on the leash then when ever you see him start to lunge then pull on the leash when ever he stops lunging then give him a treat and prase him soon he should stop.
