How Do I Train My 6 Year Old Dog To Let Me Know When She Needs To Go “potty” Outside?

By admin Posted in: Dog Training

When she was a puppy I trained her to go on “puppy pads”
in the foyer area near my front door.
She no longer has puppy pads (since 4 years ago) as
I take her outside every few hours.
If I am in the middle of something she sneaks off and pees/poops
exactly where the puppy pad used to be from several years ago.
This habit is so hard to break.
Also, I am afraid that if I never used the puppy pad, she would eliminate
wherever she pleases in the house. So I am thankful that she goes in
that one place in the house instead of the carpet or other random places.
How do I break this cycle & get her to “hold it” & tell me when she needs to go outside?

let her outside every 30 minutes and say “go potty” when she gots that down packed do it every 1 hour. and then 1 1/2 hours. she will soon jump up on you to tell you, scratch at the door, stand at the door, or stretch like she is stretching out her body, look very closely as to how she does it.
keep doing it. until you make it to about every 3-4 hours. and get a crate at night so she will learn how to hold it
i adopted 2 dogs and this was the only way i could train them after many desperate attempts.

1- Take her out every 2-3 hours and stay outside less than 30 mins or just take her for a long walk.
2- Whenever she pees or poos in the house, try taking her outside everytime she does that. (She will try to understand)
3- If she sucess not peeing or pooing at the floor for 2-3 hours try taking her every 5-6 hours and if she sucess then take her longer. Also after your walk with her try rewarding her a favorite treat.

When ever your dog goes to the bathroom in the house punish him and whenever you see him sneak off follow him and put him outside and when he comes back in give your dog a treat.

That’s what puppy pads do, teach the dog it is okay to eliminate in the house. In my opinion they are one of the worst training tools any one came up with. So confusing for the dog too! At first it is “You went in the house, Good girl!” Then when people get tired of the smell it is, “You went in the house, Bad girl.” So confusing. People should just teach the pup to go outside, as you found out.
Okay, training: When you get up in the morning, take your dog out. Walk her/him till elimination occurs, then praise him/her, a lot. Give a treat. Walk your dog again midday, afternoon and at bed time. Always stay with the dog so when she/he goes you can give praise . At this age old you should know your dogs looking for a spot behavior. When you see that behavior, get him/her out. Any time elimination occurs outside, give praise. If you catch your dog in the act inside, say no and get him/her outside. If you find a puddle or pile after the fact put your dog in another room then clean the spot with an enzyme cleaner to get rid of the odor, not cover it up. The reason for putting him/her in another room is if your dog sees you cleaning up after her she/he will think that is your job. You must be diligent and consistent. Make sure you implement a feeding schedule, if your dog eats at the same times every day she/he will poop the same times every day. At night time or when you are gone, crate train.

yeah, i had a problem with the puppy pads too. So, i weened her off of them. Like when she would go to the pad to pee or poo i woulld imediatly take her outside and eventually she learned. But you have to have patience with your dogs because yelling at them or whipping them just scares them and doesn’t really teach them anything. So, when you take your dog out tell them lets go potty and if they potty outside give them one of there favorite treats and they’ll think, “hey, if i use the bathroom outside i’ll get a treat!:)” And another thing, Don’t take your dogs out ever so hours no wonder it’s using it in the house.haha i take mine out every 45 minutes to an hour, so they won’t have an excuse to use it outside.:)

That is why I never have used potty pads.
I have raised all my dogs with a crate while I was gone.
I have learned that this is the best way to teach them to hold it.
You are going to have to stop her from “sneaking off”
If you don’t do this she will never get the point that is not ok to pee inside.
You correct her but she was trained it was ok to pee in house.
Now you have to retrain her to use the outside and that will require you to pay attention until she has learned that outside is the only place you allow. praise her when she uses the bathroom outside.
