How Do You Train A Cockatiel To Be Quiet?

By admin Posted in: Training

I have a female cockatiel who used to occasionally have chirpy days when I had her at school, but wasn’t too noisy. Now that she’s been home with me during break, I can’t get her to be quiet. I’ve tried everything. I gave her new toys, treat, I gave her attention, then I tried just ignoring it. I thought maybe it was separation anxiety, since she loves me and my dad and gets extra loud if either of us leave the room, but it continues when we’re around her. I’m afraid of her annoying my roommate, plus I’m not sure I can take much more chirping. How can I train her to be more quiet?

Most of the time those screams are a locating scream. Her way of saying “Where are you? Are you safe?” I have a female that does the same thing, even if I’m in the room.
Trying calling her name in same way you would if you wanted her attention. If she screams back right away then you know that she’s looking for you. Call her a few more times and walk toward her and pick her up or stand next to her cage. (Most cockatiels use a locating scream/call 3-4 times in quick succession before being quiet)
If she stops then, she was just making sure her flock was safe. It’s a normal cockatiel thing
If she continues after that, then she’s being loud to be loud. I would find a way to discipline her when she screams unnecessarily. Put her back in her cage for five minutes and cover it up. Wait till she’s quiet and then uncover in and praise her.
