my dog had puppies about 4 months ago and i gave one to my roommate..who wasn’t my roommate at the time..she just moved in over the weekend and she brought the puppy with her..he’s not potty trained and it gets frustrating because she’s kind of lazy and won’t really discipline him..i’m wanting to try and take this into my own hands as she works nights and i’m with him most of the time anyway..what’s the most effective way to potty train? and also..when she’s home..he will sit at the top of the stairs..which is her room..and bark at every little sound..even when he sees me or hears me he still barks..is there any way we can stop that? it wakes up my son usually..thanks for your help

To successfully housetrain a puppy you need two things: Time and patience. A puppy needs to go out at least every two hours. They do not have the same stamina for holding it that an older dog will. When it goes outside, give it a treat and praise it in a high pitched voice.
On the flip-side, if it uses the bathroom inside, chastise it by saying “bad dog” in a very low voice, then immediately taking it outside. If you can’t supervise it expect some accidents.
REMEMBER: You should NEVER hit a dog. I don’t care what it has done or what anyone else tells you. Hitting a dog, even with a rolled up newspaper, is NEVER okay. It will not understand WHY you’re hitting it and it will only make it timid or worse, aggressive.
PS: You have to be patient and wait. A puppy isn’t going to go pee and poo just because you want it to do so. Walk it around the yard as briskly as you can. Brisk walking tends to loosen bowels and make a dog want to poo.
For the barking: They sell collars that spritz citrus into a dog’s face when it barks. Dogs hate citrus and it doesn’t do any damage to them. Guarantee it will make him stop. Avoid shock collars and inhumane devices.
Had you been a responsible dog owner, and had your dog spayed, you wouldn’t be in this predicament. Anyone, with two brain cells, knows that you don’t rub a dog’s nose in hit’s mess.
needs training, exercise, socialization
leash take out
keep on leash in house, watch, take out
crate when you can’t watch, no more than 2 hours
get up at night and take out every 2 hours
Shock collar
As a reputable breeder certainly you have had a lot of experience raising puppies and this should be old hat. After all your Champion show dogs that you bred were potty trained.
Use the same methods you used for them and you should have no problems.
I want to add that since you can not be bothered to walk the dog- you just tie it up outside to do its business- you can just let the dog go in the house by lining your home with the puppy pads that are so popular. Soon you can just eliminate the pads and the dog will just pick its own spot.
Maybe when this puppy grows up it can be a mommy or daddy also.
Do keep in mind its not your dog though and your roommate may resent you bothering her property, so clear this with her before you start.
