Questions About A 1 Year Old Male Pit Bull- Pb Owners Please Way In.?

By admin Posted in: Training

My question is regarding dog stages. What can I expect as a dog gets older. I am a new dog owner and I have to admit I did not do much research on his breed before I saw him. I just fell in love with this little fellow when he was 6 weeks old on his way to the pound or worse and he has been a god send ever since! He is really playful and energetic, but is some what trained even though he is hard headed! I was told when he turns 1 he will calm down, but he is still obnoxious. Since turning one he has become more loyal and very protective, but he is not aggressive and any kind of way despite what many of you may think. He is WONDERFUL with people , especially children and I really think he thinks he is one! LOL! He is just part of the family. But again can you tell me what to expect as he matures and when do dogs mature? Oh side note he is not neutered …. I just cant bring myself to do it! LOL! I know bad owner ! LOL!
Thanks in advance.

  1. Uncle Bob Says

Pits Bulls got a bad rep from the media …..thanks to BAD people doing BAD things to them. They are NOT naturally aggressive. Any dog will bite if its mistreated. And you sound like a good person. So love your dog, and spoil him.
But you should get your boy neutered. Its not going to bring an end to the breed, just stop unwanted pregnancies. 90% of the unwanted dogs in the pound are Pit Bulls. Really! Check at the local humane society, there may even be low cost neutering programs.

  2. Future Vet Says

your dog will definitley mellow out after he is neutered because he will not be hormonal.
about the maturing- he might, but maybe he is just energenic in his personality.my friends dog is 5, but hes full of energy

  3. kingdrak Says

dog personality vary’s most do not get the calming down thing till at least 2.

  4. Dog Section Regular Says

Dogs don’t just automatically “calm down” at 1 year. Pit Bulls are a very high energy breed, it may take several years for them to “calm down.”
Have him neutered. Never leave him unattended with other animals or children. TRAIN HIM, socialize him, and EXERCISE him.
I’m a little concerned that after a YEAR you’re just NOW doing your “research.” There are plent of resources online you can look at.
    * EDIT: No excuses; Neuter the dog. He should have been neutered a LONG time ago. Be responsible, don’t let your dog be another statistic.
**** You are already an irresponsible owner. It’s the OWNERS who create the bad reputations these dogs have, YOU are contributing to that. Sure he CAN be left alone with people, but he SHOULDN’T be left alone with children or other animals unattended. YOU have to understand that!
You came on here to ASK OUR ADVICE, now that your’e getting it all you’re doing is arguing and puking up rainbows and unicorns with your “I can’t stand to neuter him!” crap. Get over it. Grow up. NOBODY here has judged you. You are getting advice from people who know the breed. You said yourself that you DID NOT do research, don’t try to back track.
No one compared you to Vick. You’re being really dramatic. It’s people like you who don’t neuter their Pit Bulls that add to their bad rep, that add to the homeless Pit Bull population, that cause them to end up in shelters, that contribute to the euthanasia of the breed EVERY DAY in this country.
Don’t be ignorant. We don’t need any more Pit Bull owners like you.

  5. Likewise Says

There are so many things you need to do.
First things first, have him neutered! Pit Bull breeds have a bad reputation and if he gets a female pregnant and they resemble a Bully breed and they end up in a shelter they could be euthanized right away. It depends on where you live as well, but for the safety of other dogs and for your own dog, neuter him. As in, make an appointment ASAP. There are so many benefits of neutering and spaying animals it is unbelievable.
Dogs don’t automatically turn calm in a day. Yes, dogs typically mellow with age but he is still a puppy. Make sure to enroll in training classes so he gets the proper training and socialization he needs and make sure to exercise him properly. He needs a lot of exercise to keep him from being so wild.

  6. *Sombra* Says

    Have him neutered.
A dog does not automatically calm down at one year of age or at ANY age. A year-old dog is still a pup. Training, training, training … and plenty of exercise. The dog is obnoxious because you ALLOW him to be. He needs to learn that certain behaviors won’t be tolerated, and that means you must be absolutely consistent in enforcing the rules.
Maturation is a process, not a done deal at a certain age. Some breeds are very much still puppies at 3 years, 4 years, sometimes forever. And individual dogs within a breed can vary greatly.
