Should I Get A Big Dog (golden Retriever)?

By admin Posted in: Dog Training

A Golden Retriever is my dream dog. Soon, within the year, I’ll be moving into a basement suite with a large yard and a giant park that is a five minute walk away. I am used to small dogs and currently I own a Pomeranian. I love dogs. I love Goldens especially because of their temperaments and their beauty. I am just unsure if I will be able to handle a big dog. It will have the best possible life that is not the issue. I am mostly concerned (and this may seem silly, but) about big messes. My small Pom gets motion sickness and throws up often because of that. I am willing to do do anything to give my Golden the best life. But I am wondering if owners of big dogs can share their experience? Is there a way to completely avoid messes or train my dog to let me know so I can let him out (I don’t mean potty training, I am definitely going to potty train him like I did with all of my dogs)? WIll he let me know by instinct? As silly as this question may seem I am curious to know.

Goldens are great dogs, only issues is they shed ALOT and they are prone to skin allergies. As far as messes, they dont barf unless they are ill, and if you potty train them well there should be no issues there. They are generally easy to train, the females are a bit more trainable but a bit less gregarious. They are smart dogs but have more heart then brains so you have to protect them from making silly mistakes to get to you, escape to find us was a big problem for us. Also large dogs take about 2-3 years to be fully mature, so expect alot of puppy behavior.

Honestly, it depends on the dogs attitude towards you and its environment (habitat). If he or she loves you with all of his heart then its a natural bond and obedience solution but if he doesn’t like you or is unhappy then their is a problem that am or my not be fixed. But by how your environment is terrific for him, and he’ll have a little play mate, ( Pomeranian) so he’ll be a perfect match for you. ( the first week you’ll feel a little iffy, but you’ll bond quickly ( type of breed trait)).
