So I’m Trying To Prove A Point To My Boyfriends Dad And Want To Know If Im Right Or If He Is?

By admin Posted in: Dog Training

Ok so they have a chihuahua and its 8 years old has been going potty in the same place on a potty pad for 8 years, he sometimes tries to go to the bathroom in our bathroom and gets yelled at and what not. Well my bf’s dad just decided no he has to go to the bathroom in the bathroom now so he put the dogs food over were his potty pad used to be. I think that this is wrong especially cause the dog now goes to the bathroom everywhere because he gets scolded for going out in the living room and still wont go in the bathroom, the dad gets mad at the dog and everyone thinking the dog is stupid for not just going where ever he moves the potty pad, but i think it’s not the dogs fault its the dads cause the dog dosent get he cant go their anymore and dosent get he needs to go in the bathroom he thinks he’s still not allowed in their and now with no potty pad he’s just going where hes been trained for the last 8 years to go. so whos right me or the dad and how do we get the dog to go in the bathroom

If hes been scolded for 8 years not to go in the bathroom then its gonna take time to train him to go there. You will need to gradually move his pads to the bathroom and give treats and love and attention when he goes n bathroom. Its gonna take some time for him to adjust. Is there a reason his potty spot is being moved?

Why are you allowing a dog to relieve himself inside? Gross.
The dog associated the place where the pad was as the place to go. The dog did not understand that it was the pad that made the place correct. It will make everyone’s life easier to put the pad back where it was.

Defiantly you if he got mad at the dog for going in the bathroom then suddenly say it’s ok to go in the bathroom that’s just hurting the dog he’s been trained to go in the same place for eight years that’s just wrong

You can finish housebreaking the dog and train it to go OUTDOORS to stop the problem.
Nobody wants to step on a dog food dish in the bathroom.

you’re right. they’re confusing the dog.
if they want it to go potty there, they need to start bringing it to that spot every hour and reward when it does.

well its habit for him to go where his pad used to be you cant just all of a sudden take what was and change it with out gradual change..hes just doing what hes been doing for eight years..good luck

    you

nah I say you are right.
1.) why after 8 years they don’t like it there..It seems like a stupid spot to begin with
2.) one would figure a doggie pad would be like a cat litter box, you move the litter box the cat doesnt still go were the litter box use to be. But if the dog has been yelled at for going in the bathroom he will be afraid to go in. They need to give him treat while in the bathroom and praise him if they expect him to be okay in the bathroom. But like you said the dog was trained for 8 yrs in one spot, it will take time to re train him.
3.) I think potty pads are kinda gross though.

You all made a very big mistake potty training your Chihuahua. Potty pads only relay to the dog that it’s ok for them to go to the bathroom in the house. If you would have trained your Chi to go outside from the very beginning, he would not be using the inside of your house as a bathroom. It’s not the dogs fault because the way he was trained, he doesn’t know that going potty in the house is not ok. It’s both your faults for not potty training your Chihuahua properly from the very beginning.
