Hi everyone. I just put a deposit down on a Malamute/Husky puppy and was wondering if taking him at 7 or 8 weeks would be better. I have been doing some research and most people are saying 8 weeks in the minimum but I have also seen some breeders and dog owners who say 7 weeks is better to begin training and bonding with the pup. I have a golden lab who is 1 1/2 years old he can play with and I would be able to be with the puppy 24/7 for a couple months (he wont be left alone) if that makes any difference. I got my Golden lab at 6 1/2 weeks and she is a great dog. Thank you!

There is not a set age between 7 or 8 weeks. It depends on the individual pup. When they are mature enough to leave is when the new owner should take them home. You can tell when a puppy is old by the way they behave. For example if they are more interested in being with humans than their litter mates they are ready to leave the litter. 8 weeks is just an average over all good age but it can be sooner and it may be later.
The older the dog, the more easy and intelligent it is to train. Now many people like to get dos that are young, so they live longer, but sense this decision is only a week apart, it doesnt make to much of a difference. But I would prefer 8 weeks.
I think 8 weeks is better because it will allow them more time to be nurtured by the mother. I think it is more important that the puppy has more time bonding with the mother than with the owner. It is better for its development and self confidence in the near future.
Illegal btw [:! The reason is that it learns from the mother who is bringing her intellegence to the little ones to learn aswell. Before I got my puppy he was 12 weeks because it was better he learned a lot from his mommy! But Good like on your puppy
And it’s only a week not a year or anything [:!
Wait the extra week, worry about bringing the pup to the realm of the lab. It might not want to be invaded and u will give extra attention to the pup which the “boss” (Lab) might not like
no good breeder lets one go before 8 weeks
no good breeder mixes dogs
THAT WEEK MATTERS .
just wait another week .
Everyone thinks that it is important for the pup to be with mom until 8-12 weeks. Sort of true. Its also really important for the pup to be with its siblings. The other puppies are teaching your pup about all kinds of important social things at that age. The pup will learn more about not biting from its siblings than from you. They learn how to challenge for leadership and how to give in to those who have it. They learn manners such as “don’t stick your face in mom’s food or you will lose it” While all these things may not be hugely important to humans, they are vital to the dog. Kids learn more in nursery school from the other kids than they do from the teachers. So give your pup the opportunity to be with his “teachers” for another week or two. You will both appreciate it in the long run.
One, anyone who breeds mixes is not a good breeder, and you should refrain from buying from them. They probably don’t give a crap about their dogs health and are in it for the money, even if the amount you receive from breeding is very little.
Two, puppies need milk till eight weeks of age, and in one week a puppy can learn many valuable lessons it can use for its entire life. Separating a puppy from its mother to young can result in undesirable behavior that could have been prevented if you just let the puppy stay with its mother another week.
