Would A Rottweiler Be Ok For Me?

By admin Posted in: Training

I will be going into the coast guard, and when i am deployed i will be living in my own apartment. I will be working days mostly, like 40 hours a week. I have grown up with dogs my whole life, and know how to train dogs very well. I just need to know if Rotty’s are ok to be by themselves for part of the day. But i will give them tons of attention when i get home.. And i would be able to walk him/her every day.

if you are single that is a horrible choice. Any dog is a horrible choice. You will have duty nights, even duty weekends where you will go to work Friday morning and not return home until Monday. What then for the dog? Even if you are married, if you are still young, footloose and fancy free, able to come and go as you please, a dog is still a mistake. If you are on a ship and your lovely bride decides a port call is going to be made for a long weekend and she wants to drive or fly to where you are… again, what then for the dog?
I was a Coast Guard wife for many, many years. I told my fiance I wouldn’t marry him if there wasn’t a dog in our house. We had one. We were also stationed on Kodiak when we were first married and he was at a land billet (first the Support Center, then after A school we stayed on Kodiak and he was stationed at the marine Safety Detachment). There were weekends we wanted to get away to Anchorage and we had to get a dog sitter. I didn’t mind, it wasn’t that difficult to do but it was still a pain in the neck to have someone stay at our place when we traveled.
Do not get a dog, especially if you are single! That would be a horrible mistake!

You should wait until you are situated in your new home before make any decision. You may end up in a place that doesn’t allow dogs over certain size or not allow pets period. Rottweilers take a lot time and patience to train. They can be left alone but dogs get into trouble when left alone too long. As long as you are willing to put in the time your rewards will be great. You already know that so I don’t see a problem if you really want one. Just make sure to do your research and move first. New jobs are always overwhelming the first couple of weeks and you may not be able to put as much time into your dog as you want. Not to mention new people at any work place tend to get the crappy times and get called in more.
Rottweilers do have health problems as do all dogs. They can have hip dislpaysia for example. So just make sure to look at the dog’s history before purchase. Though I personally would encourage you to adopt. You can look into Rottweiler rescues but mutts need homes too. Good luck.

depends on how much time you will be around. all animals need to be socialised correctly and not left to amuse themselfs for long periods at a time. that will only create bad behavior to pass the bordom aka barking ALL day long! and im not sure your neighbours will enjoy that. haha but in saying all this its always a gamble. id suggest a cat. as they are so independant and dont mind being alone. i have a greyhound and work in a pet store so i take her to work. i work 40 hours a week and she would HATE being alone in the yard. id never do it to her. also if you get your dog as a puppy and work so much you will have a very unhappy and missbehaved animal. maybe wait until you have more time.
